Operation HOME: A 10-Day Solo Expedition to Support the Homeless Community in Northern Ireland

At The Welcome Organisation, we are always inspired by the incredible individuals who go above and beyond to raise awareness and support for people experiencing homelessness. One such individual is Graham Fergus, who recently undertook a powerful and deeply personal challenge: a 10-day solo expedition through the Mourne Mountains to highlight the daily struggles faced by those without a safe place to call home.

Graham’s journey called Operation HOME was not just a physical test, but a statement of solidarity and a call for understanding. We're honoured to have partnered with him on this challenge, and we’re proud to share his story in his own words below.

Operation HOME

"As someone who's experienced both highs and lows, I've always been aware of the growing homelessness problem in Northern Ireland. Despite my own struggles, I wanted to make a positive impact. That's when I partnered with the Welcome Organisation to raise awareness and funds for the homeless community.

I embarked on a 10-day solo expedition in the Mournes Mountains, covering 100 miles with a 20kg backpack and only one day's worth of food. My goal was to replicate the daily struggles of homeless people and challenge the narrative that they're all addicts. I wanted to understand the root causes of homelessness and find ways to support those in need.

I packed lightly, with only essentials and emergency supplies. My daily routine consisted of waking up at 6:30 AM, collecting water, and hiking 10 miles per day. I had to be mindful of my limited food and water, and I relied on the kindness of strangers to get by.

The first two days were the toughest, with blistering heat and worn-out knees. But as I continued, I met incredible people who shared their stories and offered support. I lost four toenails and gained two blisters, but the experience was transformative. I had to adapt to the challenges of living with limited resources, and it gave me a new perspective on the struggles of the homeless community.

Meeting people and sharing stories was a highlight of the journey. I was blown away by the generosity of strangers who offered food, drinks, and time. However, the fatigue, midges, and losing toenails were tough to deal with. The last two days of heavy rain were particularly challenging, as I had to wear wet clothes and manage without proper drying facilities.

I interacted with over 300 people, raised nearly £9,000 for three charities, and completed the 93-mile journey in 10 days. I lost 4kg in weight and gained a new perspective on life. The experience changed me for the better, teaching me the value of vulnerability and resilience.

I'm planning something daring and exciting for 2026, so stay tuned!"

Graham’s journey through Operation HOME is a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of compassion in action. His determination to walk in the shoes of others, raise vital funds, and challenge harmful stereotypes has made a real and lasting impact not only for those he met along the way, but for the many people our services support every day.

From all of us at The Welcome Organisation, thank you, Graham, for your courage, your heart, and your commitment to standing beside those most in need. We are truly grateful for your support and we can’t wait to see what you do next.
